Jobs fill your pocket, but adventures fill your soul
- Jamie Lyn Beatty

Having lived in California all my life, I’ve always
been torn between the mountains or the beach. The
beautiful part about Lake Tahoe, and what i’ve come to
appreciate over decades of trips there, is that you don’t
have to choose. The lake straddles the state line
between California and Nevada and offers state parks,
national forests, and surrounding cities with plenty of
shopping and entertainment. Whether you swim, fish,
hike, or ski, Lake Tahoe will wow you with not only its
beauty, but with never ending adventures for the whole

The first and most important thing to consider when
planning a trip to the Lake tahoe area is the season in
which you will be traveling, since it will dictate most of
your activities. If skiing is your thing, during the winter
months the Sierra Nevada mountains get absolutely
covered in fresh powder and you can snowboard or ski
with unparalleled views at some of the best resorts in
California. During the summer however, the weather is
warm and lake activities including boating and jet
skiing, are family favorites. Both times of year offer
equally incredible outdoor fun, and it comes down to
your personal preference for activities. It’s incredible
how the landscape of the mountains and the feel of the
town changes during the seasons. Tahoe has been my
favorite place in the world since I was a kid, and it’s too
difficult to pick a favorite season, thus many of the tips
in this book will touch on things to do during both
winter and summer seasons.

Something to keep in mind if you are driving to the
Lake, or flying in and renting a car, is four-wheel or all-
wheel drive during winter. Many times, chains are
required to drive over some of the mountain passes and
on the extra snowy days when the snow turns to ice,
sheriffs won’t let you drive over the mountain if your
car doesn’t look like it can handle the snow. Some of
the higher peaks are above 7,000 feet elevation and can
get buried during a storm, so it’s recommended that you
carry chains in your car at all times during the winter.
Many roads will have chain control stops where you
can pay a small fee for someone to install them on your
car, which is very handy so also remember to keep
some cash on you too! If you plan to fly in and rent a
car, make sure it has all wheel drive and talk to the
rental company about whether or not chains are
necessary. We always take our Subaru and it handles
the snow like a champ, but we’ve had family that hasn’t
been able to make certain gatherings during a storm
when they couldn’t drive over the hill. It’s crucial to get
yourself a car that will be able to make it and keep you
