America by A.R. Howard offering the inside scoop on Miami and

Greater Than a Tourist series, this book will give you travel tips
from someone who has lived at your next travel destination.

or store hours but instead will give you excitement and knowledge
from a local that you may not find in other smaller print travel

know the people and the culture. By the time you finish this book,
you will be eager and prepared to travel to your next destination.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow
mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on
these accounts.” - Mark Twain

When I moved to Miami 23 years ago, I knew
nothing of the cultural diversity, the warm willingness
of strangers to openly share personal bits and pieces of
their culture, all the year-round weekly festivals, or that
I was truly stepping into what feels, acts, and looks like
a Magic City . In this book, you will find hidden gems,
hotspots, tourist attractions, and random tips that took
me years to discover on my own. Keep in mind this is a
short list of tips in no particular order, where I cannot
possibly include everything Miami has to offer! From
my decades of exploring, here is a little help to find an
oasis all your own in ‘The Magic City’.

The first, and probably the most important of all “50
Tips From A Local”, or from any tourist guide to
Miami and surrounding areas (South Florida) is simply,
bring a pocket translator!

When I first moved to Miami, I felt I entered a
foreign land. I was looking over my shoulder ready for
someone to request my passport (I am from Ohio).
There is always someone in earshot speaking Spanish,
French, German, Russian, Slavic, and the list goes on.
Three very good friends of mine that I met in Miami are
fluent in five to six languages.

On that note, don’t exit the plane yelling, “Speak
English! This is America!”, like my Grandpa. Have a
translation App ready to go, free to download on any
smartphone or tablet. I used to use an actual “Pocket
Translator”. Simply press record as someone speaks
their native tongue, then press ‘translate to English’, or
your preferred language. Record what you would like to
say, and have it translated to their language. You’ll
have a new friend in no time! Or at the very least,
you’ll know where to find the restroom.

Many Northern USA and Canadian residents escape
their harsh winters by migrating south to Miami, such
as their locally coined nickname “Snowbirds” suggest.
The cost of lodging can easily double during the tourist
season of fall and winter months. Plan your vacation for
“off Season” dates of the Summer and fall to keep more
money in your pocket for local festivities. It will be
much easier to find a table at local eateries as well as a
spot on the beach around May thru September.

You will most likely hear locals conversate more
openly at nearby establishments during this more
peaceful season. People feel less crowded and rushed.
It's the time of year to have an extra cup of coffee with
your breakfast and tip your server an extra dollar or

Enjoy the white sand beaches, the natural sand
beaches, and the opportunity to learn about different
cultures. There is amazing art to admire free of charge
everywhere you look. There are free days at the local
art museums. Breathtaking landscapes surround you,
and food and drink from the many island cultures are on
almost every block!

Indulge in the different cultures, dances, and
languages ...try learning them. It took me years to break
out of my dignified Midwestern Bible Belt American
shell, but once I did, there is no other place I’d rather be
than in Magic City constantly learning and evolving.
Miami is all about diversity and inclusion. It is one
massive caring melting pot of acceptance. Bienvenido a
Miami! Enjoy Paradise!

A longtime resident of North Miami Beach, FL,
A.R. Howard waded thru a slew of server and
bartending jobs before attending college, then served in
AmeriCorps National Service in order to teach
underserved inner-city children of Miami how to read.
A.R. then practiced Real Estate as a licensed Realtor in
Miami and surrounding cities. A.R. slid to the other end
of the gamut later becoming a Political Activist.
Always the Artist, Howard is currently working on a
book series documenting the true life events of two
children being ripped away from their loving mother
after police were called to an incident between a
teenage girl’s male friend and her father where no
arrests were made; remanded to state custody, where
the [other] now eight year old girl still resides in a
group home one and a half years later, alone, the now
sixteen year old girl is still missing after being abruptly
moved from the group home placement with her little
sister three days before Easter, for not following rules.
Having ran away after Children’s Services refused to
place her little sister with her, where the home for
siblings awaited her sister’s arrival. The State continues
to illegally hold the eight year old in a group home for
teenagers, with one and a half hour a week visits in a
boardroom with her Mommy, and a state worker sitting,
watching, listening. “Seven Years Old Living in a
Group Home Alone; Eight Now, Where is My Sister?
What Did Mommy Do?” Going on Pre-sale January,
2019. Ongoing series.

A.R. Howard is an Artist of all mediums, active in
the Truth Movement, and can be seen working [and
people watching] from local cultural treasure troves that
only a [Miami] Local would know.
